It’s Good To Be King

I made this painting to use for making invitations to my dad’s surprise birthday party this coming month. I got the idea from my “It’s Good To Be Queen” painting. Dad is the king of his castle after all, or at least the king of his woodworking shop! I’m going to Photoshop some party info onto the top of this and print out postcards and fill them out and mail them. It’s quite a fun project! I haven’t been able to use natural lighting for photos since I broke my ankle, so the colors in this aren’t’ quite perfect but they are close. I used a satin varnish on this so it really has a lot of shimmer which never shows up via the Internet. Tomorrow starts my physical therapy and I’m more than a bit apprehensive! I literally can’t walk… yet, I can do all things through Christ! Amen! This too shall pass! See you back here tomorrow.

Rhythm & Blues

Rhythm & Blues inspired by listening to music while painting. This was so much fun and I did a lot of finger-painting on this! With layers of papers, tissues, paints, stamps, sticker, gold leaf and sheet music attire! I used vintage sheet music for her dress and used blues and greens and my fingers to paint her dress. I added a thick layer of Deco Art So Soft Fashion Sequins with my finger. Very little of this painting was done with a brush. I used a paint wash over the tissue papered background and then squeezed out paints onto a recycled meat tray and used a wet paper towel I wadded up to “sponge” on the paint. I love how the colors blend together with a little water and finger-painting. This was a freeing process that allowed me to be messy in the neatest way possible.  I added glitters and glazed and topped her off with a couple coats of satin varnish that shimmers gently in the light. This is my rendition of organized chaos. Enjoy!

You Are The Light In My Darkness

What a “bright” idea! This little 4×4 painting was inspired by an advertising fridge magnet I saw on my mom’s fridge way back in November. It was an advertisement for the local public utility department. I didn’t see a light-bulb when I looked at it. I saw art waiting to happen. Why not have a light bulb come to life? They do when you flip the switch after all! The palette for the painting was inspired by my friend Heather on MMW.  I fell in love using blues and greens together on the piece I made for her and it carried over to several other paintings currently drying on my desk.

I was thankfully given permission to lose the boot and got the go ahead to walk. However, I will need six weeks of physical therapy to do so. I can’t put much weight on my foot without GREAT pain. I’m looking forward to my first appointment this coming Tuesday. I’m apprehensive and anxious and want to get walking asap! I haven’t been ANYWHERE other than the doctors office since Christmas. I’m not only stir-crazy, but I could very well have the worse case of Cabin Fever known to wo-man! I’m thrilled to be getting out.. even if it’s for physical “torture” therapy! So for the trying times ahead… The Lord is the Light in my darkness!

Spring Forth

I’m back in the saddle again! Sort of. If you think a wheelchair can have a saddle then yes, I’m back. I got my dad to cut my birch wood in to LOTS of 4×4 squares for me and this is the first one I’ve completed since before Christmas. I was pretty much doodling on wood when my mom gave me a bag with a variety of decorative paper napkins in it…. I had wood burned this face onto my 4×4 and was wondering what I was going to do with it. I knew the instant I opened up the bag my mom gave me! There inside was the most gorgeous floral napkin that just oozed spring! So with careful cutting and placement I arranged some flowers and leaves around this spring time girl and now she’s peeking through the blooms of the season. I added a paint wash to the flowers to boost their color a bit and used some scribbles dimensional paint, some glitter glues, gel pens, mini stickers, punched papers and rubber stamps. There’s a little bit of everything here. To top it off… I was playing with my printer I got for my birthday and popped this mini painting in it and hit the “Color Book” button! Oh yeah! Now we’re talking. It enlarged my original to 8×8 and I’m very excited about the possibilities that this give me. I’ve had to size down the original coloring book page but here’s a glimpse for you! Isn’t this just delicious?

Iron on came to mind instantly! What comes to mind for you?

Drum Roll!…. Tomorrow is my appointment with my Orthopedic Specialist. Please send up a prayer for me that he gives me permission to walk!

Spring Super Sale

Spring Super Sale! Just in time for Easter. I’ve marked down ALL my jewelry in my Etsy Shop! Click on by and check out the new low prices. I’m busy, busy, busy with the creative process. Today I’m working on a “King” piece I’ll be using to photograph and make invitations with for my Dad’s upcoming birthday. Shh… It’s a surprise. =) I’m really enjoying the process! I’m using lots of purples, greens, and blues and am excited about turning the art into postcards. I also have several other odds and ends on my desk that are poking at me for attention but they will just have to wait! As always there are just not enough hours in the day to get as much art done as I’d like. Thankfully the weekend is here at last and I’ll have more time for play! Then come Wednesday I’ll have the moment of truth with my Orthopedist! If he gives me the go ahead to walk and lets me know how long I’ll be wearing my “boot” I just might “pimp” my boot with some funky fringe! Why not?! =) We’ve gotta make life fun after all! Be sure to share what you’re working on and I’ll head on over and check you out. Happy TGIF!

Lavender Essence

Ξ March 18th, 2010 | → 4 Comments | ∇ Art-tastic, For The Kingdom, The Great Outdoors!, The Healing Garden |

I started ‘Lavender Essence’ soon after I got the boot on my foot. I felt confident enough to amble my way to my desk and get out some watercolor paper and practice my skill. I was a bit hesitant as I hadn’t used any watercolors while journaling and after over two months I was praying my skill hadn’t evaporated. It took me nearly a month to get this painting done but only because my attention span was wishy washy. I really don’t do much work on paper so it’s always a bit of a challenge to do mixed media on a surface that curls and warps. I’m going to add a bit more “make up” around her eyes to add more emphasis to her pretty little face, but for the most part I’m happy enough to call this done. I cut this down to 5×7 and will be framing it in a collaged, mixed media frame (once I get to The Dollar Tree to purchase one.) This watercolor mixed media is done with pre-punched purples flowers, rubberstamps, punched out tear-shaped leaves, and the butterflies are collaged on using the decorate edges from paper towels. Yes… You really can make art out of anything! With smears of glitter and stencils, as well as crinkled tissue paper smeared with paint this ‘Little Lavender Lady’ will brighten up any small space. And seriously, who doesn’t love purple?

Hope

~Artist Trading Card~
I call this “Hope” as it’s made for a friend I met online through MMW. She found out her mother has liver cancer and it just broke my heart. I’ve been laying around since Christmas with a broken ankle unable to walk and do as much for myself as I would like to ~  but as life teaches us, there is always someone else who has things worse than you do. It’s these situations that help to humble us and take our minds off of ourselves and focus on what’s really important. Loving someone else! Giving to others is so very important. We no longer focus on our troubles, we turn our thoughts to helping others and it helps us to create lasting friendships while encouraging people who really need it when they are going through really tough times. Find someone who needs some love and embrace!

I’m finally over the “yuck” that was either cold or flu that lasted nearly two weeks and back at my desk! I’m going full force on some art pieces that have been piled on my desk since before Christmas so I’ll have lots to share soon! Also… video for my class will be taped soon, as soon as I can pile some supplies on my desk and get the process going. Which will be soon. (Next week… if all goes well!) So stay tuned! I’ll be offering my class soon!

I have one week left before revisiting my Dr and seeing if he’ll be kind enough to give me the go ahead to walk. I’m pretty sure I’ll be stuck with this boot for a bit more but if I can walk in it.. it’s all good with me! /Crossing fingers and saying prayers…not necessarily in that order! =)

A Burst of Spring Flowers

Ξ March 13th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Art-tastic, Journal Jazz, The Great Outdoors!, The Healing Garden |

As you can see I’ve been playing with my Prismacolor Pencils. Oh what fun! This trio of flowers is made using the manipulation of a stencil. It’s a flower stencil that I’ve used before in paintings but I added twice the petals around a drawn circle center. Remember you don’t have to use stencils the way they are… use your creative muscles and think outside your comfort zone to find new and creative uses for what you have on hand. I also taped the petals off part of the stencil and used a sponge to add chalk to the center part of a flower for the blue “circles.” The rest of the journal entry is my doing. With swirls and lines dots and dashes. However, the dragonflies did fly in off a sheet of stickers there were laying nearby! I let them stay and flutter as they do look so at home in the bursting garden. This labor of love is my first of MANY uses with my new pencils! Stay tuned for more art-tastic creations to come.

Love At First Sight

Ξ March 9th, 2010 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Art-tastic, For The Kingdom, Supplies/Techniques, The Great Outdoors!, The Healing Garden |

These arrived late yesterday afternoon. I’m in love. I’ve been wanting a set of Prismacolor Colored Pencils for well over a year now and finally just went for it. They are oh-so-delicious and creamy to create with. It’s like blending with little sticks of butter! The Julia Child of the Pencil! The colors are so rich and dreamy! You all know what a sucker I am for a good art supply. Well… for any art supply for that matter! Be it good or some recycled thingamajig I found at the bottom of my junk drawer! There’s just something awe-inspiring about opening up a decorative tin box and finding a stick rainbow! Now even my stick men will look groovy! I went right to work on an entry in my art journal using my new tools! It’s coming along quite nicely and I’m having a great time playing. I’ll be sure to share it when it’s done. I’ve also been watching some movies and elevating my ankle per Dr’s request. I’m nursing myself through some flu-like symptoms as well. As they say… “It never rains but when it pours!” It’s been a monsoon year for me thus far, yet I expect more to come … from the sunny side of life! As without the rains of life we can’t have rainbows! Even if they do come in stick form in a decorative tin! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Look at what I’m holdin!

Chick it out …

Ξ March 3rd, 2010 | → 4 Comments | ∇ Art-tastic, For The Kingdom, Journal Jazz, The Healing Garden |

Oh to fly again up my feet! I’m still “Boot-Leggin!” This bright and cheerful bird-brain did take my mind off my woes for a bit however. The bright colors of spring and summer striking against the harsh white backdrop of my journal. I’ll dream in brighter colors tonight. … I hope! I spent some time today working in Adobe Photoshop re-adjusting some postcards I’ve been playing with. Once I’ve mastered how to tile them I’ll be printing some out and getting them up on Etsy. I’m also planning on some bookmarks as well and a few other stationary items. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know! I’m always excited to hear from other people.

Until later! Happy Hump Day!
