Daisy Chain

More play…
This page of daisies was a doodle session for me a few days ago. I should have taken the picture before I started working on the back side of the paper as the wet medium I used warped the picture. That’s journaling for you though. I used a combination of chalks, pastels, and a bit of white acrylic as a undercoating for the flowers. This is just a simple summer page that was a way to unwind as I put my ankle up on fluffy pillows at days end. Today I wood-burned six mini 4×4″ paintings. I have some paint on four of them at the moment. I like to have more than one painting going on at a time to allow for drying time. It’s incredibly boring to watch paint dry and once can only play so much FreeCell between coats. I’m up to my elbows in paint and I need to hit the kitchen and finish off dinner preparation so I’ll say g’day until tomorrow! Short and sweet today! Enjoy your Hump Day evening.

Blissful Blessings

Blissful Blessings
This journal entry was super fun! I had a certain idea in mind when I started to tackle this page but it took a turn of it’s own. This happens quite often actually. I see something and the canvas sees something else. I always put my “head” aside and let what will be … be. This prayer for blissful blessings took on a more peaceful approach that what I was thinking… but then isn’t that what blessings are all about? Her robe is made from a lot of layering. I started by washing the paper with a purple color and layering ripped mulberry paper over it… then I added a lavender paper napkin that I had peeled the layers from and crumpled. I let the mulberry paper fibers hang off the edges and then layered some fun fur that I twisted to the inner edge. I also added some silver leafing and topped her robe off with a rubbing of purple mica powder. She’s amid flowers and fireflies and is peacefully praying in her garden. I LOVE how she turned out. She’s special to me for some reason. Maybe it’s her peaceful praying. Or maybe I love her robe. I truly don’t know why I like her so much. But I find that she makes me smile… a lot! And now….. she’s going to smile too.. because it’s time for Tammy’s Toys!

Tammy’s Toys

This funky pencil sharpener is awesome! His chest opens up to reveal where to insert your pencil.. then after you’ve put a point on your graphite… he’ll walk…. the sharpening winds him up and then he’s ready to march across your desk and do his ditty! NOW.. if I could only train him to pick up paints and brushes on his merry way we’d have the perfect relationship!

I wanted to make a separate post about this wonderful surprise that I got to on Saturday morning when I awoke and checked my email. I had a comment on a blog posting I had made and Veronica replied with a invite to her blog and a gift for me! I was more than delighted. I have been thinking for the past few weeks how I want to add some color to our overly neutral living room. I had a color scheme in mind too! I wanted… blues/greens/ and a just a touch of pale yellow. I was invited by Veronica to pick a painting from her Etsy shop and I found one with the colors I knew would work for me. I have yet to tell the hubs of my plan to alter the “beige/brown” blah that has me incredibly uninspired. So when this painting arrives I’m putting it us ASAP along with some goodies I’ll be buying to do a mini makeover! We all need change to help us grow and to give us a fresh outlook and I want to thank Veronica for helping to aid that change I have been seeking for so long! God Bless you girl! Visit her here and admire her wonderful paintings! Thank you with all my heart Veronica!

Playtime

Ξ June 28th, 2010 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Art-tastic, Journal Jazz |

I’ve spent the past few days just playing around in my art journal. I’m desperately trying to fill this journal so I can start in my Moleskine. I don’t like to abandon a journal once I’ve started in it. I love going back over old journals and seeing the progress I’ve made over the past few years. I spend time online reading artists blogs and looking over art groups on Flickr to find ideas that will challenge me. I check out the artists work and then put my own twist on it. I throw caution to the wind and let myself do something that I don’t normally do. It’s how we learn. This journal entry is simply an illustration done on pages torn from an old paperback book. I used a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup wrapper for the flower center. I lightly sketched the flower out with a pencil then went over it with a .02 Micron pen. For color I used a little bit of colored pencil and a little bit of pastel pencil. The flower center is acrylic paint gone over with my Micron pen. It’s basically recycled art. I LOVE images done over text. I like how the shading looks and how the text shows through playing peek-a-boo with the eye.

I’ve spent the better part of the morning, well…actually…ALL of the morning working on my Etsy shop. I’ve added ALL of recent mini paintings and throughout the week I plan on adding some of my medium sized paintings as well. I was hoping to have my work in shops downtown by this time but due to my ankle and my inability to do much walking I’m rather stuck for now. Hopefully I’ll get some news this Friday when I see my Ankle specialist again. This is the worst Christmas present I’ve ever had! It just keeps on giving (grief!) I’m bound and determined to turn this lemon into lemonade though! So don’t give up on me just yet. Check back again tomorrow ~ I have an especially sweet art journal entry I want to share with you.

Rhythm & Blues

Rhythm & Blues
Journal play time again. I’ve seen other monochromatic faces and thought I’d give one a try. It was quite a challenge using all blue for this play day. Blues can  beextremely uncomplimentary to each other if not chosen carefully. Next time I think I’ll give green a try. I did enjoy playing with quite a few different mediums here. I used colored pencils, acrylic paints, watercolor pencils, felt markers, rubber stamping inks, pastels, chalks and Ranger Distress crackle paint in “faded jeans.” I bought the crackle paint several months ago and this as my first time using it. It’s super thick! It comes with it’s own paint brush attacked inside the lid but it’s very large, so I took a smaller brush and applied it to see what would happen. I love it. It crackles wonderfully and I love how parts of it falls off. I’m sure if it’s sealed that wouldn’t happen. It’s always fun to try new products and to experiment and find ways of fitting them into your playtime.

Yesterday I spent the better part of the day outside on the deck in the sun varnishing 22 mini paintings – front and back. It was perfect weather for it, the varnish dried quickly and it wasn’t too warm. It was absolutely perfect! I enjoyed a huge icy mug of Diet Pepsi… (an unhealthy weakness of mine.) and got all my paintings done. Now I just need to attach some hangers and put the rest of them up on Etsy and see if I get any nibbles.

What have all of you been making lately? Are you playing in your journals or learning new techniques? Taking classes or maybe giving some? I’d love to hear your comments and see what’s new on your easels or in your journals. Don’t be shy! Happy Sunday everyone and God Bless YOU!

Ripplette Van Winkle

Ξ June 25th, 2010 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Around The House, Art-tastic, Journal Jazz, Les Petite Dolls |

Ripplette Van Winkle
A few weeks ago I was looking at varies prompt sites for artistic inspiration. One of them was the word “ripple.” I’m positive this is NOT what they had in mind ~ but I instantly thought of Rip Van Winkle… and thought…why not Ripplette Van Winkle. So I pulled out my art journal and went to play. Most of what ends up in my art journal stays in Vegas. (Hi….I’m Vegas!) but sometimes I share the non-personal stuff. This was so fun that I thought I’d give you a peek at the pretty sleeping gray-haired Ripplette. I used a handful of mediums as usual and some glitter punched circles from some awesome paper my mom bought me. I used a credit card and green paint to make the grass, I stamped on the butterflies and the sun.. and added highlights and a bit of shading. I wish I could sleep this well. I fell asleep last night at 4:00 A.M and work up before 8:00 A.M. I have been working on getting our living room back to normal after having it in havoc during my ankle recovery. I’ve managed to finish up some vacuuming and got the table into place so life looks normal in that room again. I’m in the middle of mopping the kitchen right now. The floor got slippery so I’m letting it dry and I’m going back in sock-footed for the final swish! Then I’m going to hit the showers and get freshed up for a wonderful Friday evening later tonight and a new episode of Merlin!

Knottia

Knottia
This piece of wood intrigued me and I wanted to emphasize the imperfections of my usual smooth “canvas.” This came together quite nicely and I had a blast with the background. I used blobs of brushed and smudged on soft-bodied acrylic paints and dripped rubbing alcohol into it while it was still wet. This technique makes the paint ooze to the sides of the alcohol droplets. I did this for quite a few layers until the canvas was covered and I could no long see the wood behind the paint. I used a leaf stamp to add a forest feel and punched some flowers from some textured white collage paper. The yellow flower centers are pieces of confetti that I layered with three coats of sparkle glaze. I used gold leafing to define her wooden knot and capped her off with a forested pattern beret. I used my finger to add a touch of glitter to the blue areas and let a dragonfly covered with mica powders land on the painting. She has a pale green rhinestone to let you know she has a twinkle in her eye! She’s cute and I love her dearly. I love how the colors blended together so well in the background. She truly does look like she’s out in the forest.Speaking of forests…..

Accidental Art
For the past week we’ve had gnats bothering us and getting into our drinks. I searched the kitchen and tossed out an onion that was going bad and considered the job done. Well… the gnats had other ideas. They refused to leave. Puzzled by their persistence I searched a cupboard today where I store my potatoes. As you may know, I’ve been down since Christmas with a broken ankle and just started to hobble within the past few weeks. I dug through this very deep cupboard and found this “accidental art” of red potatoes growing what looks like berries. I thought this was incredibly awesome… yet it wasn’t “rotten” so I kept mining the cupboard for the reason for the gnats… and yes.. way in the back on the very bottom in the darkest corner I found a bag of “liquid” potatoes. They are now out in the garbage, the gnats and the gnuncles have left the premises and we are now not batting at the air around us. Here’s a closer look at the tangled web of taters.

I’ve lovingly named this “Potato Octopus”

Wilder Combs

Wilder Combs
This is a gift I made for someone who’s helping in caring for my mom while she recovers from her ankle injury. She’s a neighbor of my parents and owns a hair salon beside her house. The name of the salon is Wilder Combs. Her maiden name was Combs and she married a man with the last name of Wilder. How ironic is that. What a creative name. She’s extremely talented with hair and when I go down to visit my parents next time I’m going to her to have my weeds whacked! All that’s left to do to this little painting is to varnish it and add a hanger and mail it off. I’m very pleased with how it turned out and I thoroughly enjoyed adding all the “bling” to this to make it pop. I hope she likes it.

It’s actually hot today…I guess the sun finally got the “it’s summer” memo. We’ve had rain, after rain, after rain…which I’m fine with, but it’s refreshing to see the color blue once in a while when I look out the window. I think I’ll buy some flowers to plant for our deck this weekend. It’s been a dull and colorless winter/spring for me as I’ve spent most of it on the couch with my leg elevated. Dreariness gets amplified when you have to stare at it day in and day out. I guess that’s why I’ve been so busy painting colorful happy girly paintings. Now I’m off to the kitchen to fill a glass with ice and find some juice to toss in it. Happy Sunny Summer Wednesday!

MarmaLady

MarmaLady
I did this painting for a challenge that I just joined on Flickr. Here’s the website if you’re interested in checking it out. Prompts can be fun and helpful in challenging you to push your limits and step outside your comfort zone. The prompt for this was using orange and brown together. Orange isn’t a color I use very often, growing up I actually hated the color orange…and my mom loved it. Our living room had lots of orange in it. Since then there have been many changes in that room and today it’s a stunning purple/lavender combination. (Thank you mom!)

I just went with the flow and let the painting paint itself and I’m so happy I did… my brain didn’t get in the way. I used the mediums I normally use and it just “happened.” I was stumped when I thought about naming this painting. I thought.. “orange?” Hmm, what’s orange… oranges are orange. Then it hit me! Marmalade is orange. So I dubbed her MarmaLady! Does she own the village shop that sells jams and jellies or is she the Lady in the castle that gets treated to marmalade on her toast each morning?

◄Tammy’s Toys Tuesday►

Goofy as it is ~ it’s quite fun to peel off each day to find out what’s hiding behind yesterday! If you don’t know who Hoops & Yoyo are you can check them out at Hallmark online. They are such fun and fantastically funny creatures that are sure to worm their way into your heart… and possibly onto your desk. This “toy” was a gift form the hubs for Christmas…so it’s a gift that keeps on giving… for a whole year. It’s a smile a day.
