The Lion Sleeps Tonight

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

I had this little wooden canvas sitting on my desk for months. I tossed a few ideas around in my head as to what I was going to do with such an odd shaped left-over scrap and I came across this idea on Friday night. The size of this is approx 6″x3″. I was digging through my HUGE pile of stencils and came across this lion and I knew instantly what I was going to do. I started by wood burning the lion on and then added ripped up pieces of vintage sheet music. Then the rest just fell into place. Sponging on paint over a base coat of pale blue, I added a deep turquoise and purple using a very wet Kleenex. I LOVE how the colors appeared so soft using this technique I’ll definitely be doing it again. After that I just started my laying of bling and stamps and stars and “fun” stuff. I used Martha Stewart’s metallic glass micro-beads in Fire Opal for the texture on the lions mane…I used extra mod podge to be sure he wouldn’t “shed.”

This is perfect for a child’s room or for a music lover. It’s going up on Etsy tomorrow along with a list of other things I have gathered around me in preparation for Etsy Christmas shoppers! I hope you take the time to click on over to visit my shop just to see what I’ve been up to. It’s quite impressive to see so much of my art in one spot! And it just keeps growing. Some of my best sellers at the moment are my magnets and my key chains. And remember ~~~ I’m always open to creating custom art just for you!

I’ll be back here tomorrow to share even more of my beautiful messes! Drop on by and visit. =)

Faith

I thought I lost this while making these crosses a few weeks back. I was digging through some of the draws I keep my plethora of bling in and it popped out at me! I was delighted to find it. I have a way of “misplacing” and/or losing things all the time… and I look high and low and usually they are right in front of me. I’ve been searching the house like crazy lately looking for one of my art sketchbooks. I did a rough sketch that I wanted to turn into a painting and it’s in the missing sketchbook. I’ve prayed about it so now it’s out of my hands. Now I’m just waiting on God to tell me where I put it. It’s amazing that you can lose something in such a small living space.

In keeping with the red theme I wanted to share this photo I took of our neighbor’s tree. It was a tad blurry so I used Photoshop to add an artistic touch to it. I used Filter/Artistic/Sponge to get the effect and I think it looks very cool. I look forward to fall each year as I know which foliage to watch for. Every year is a wonderful blast of golds, oranges, and reds, and this tree never disappoints. God’s angels must be truly busy in the fall with their paint brushes all over the trees! Kudos angels… your work is stunning!

Consignment Done!

  Yet to be Named!

I finally finished my first “official” consignment. It’s surprising how nerve wracking painting on “command” can be. I’ve actually made a few changes to this since this photograph. I changed the eye color to brown and I’ve added several layers of glitter glaze to the blue on the teacup. This was created for Andrea, she wanted something custom to give to her sister for Christmas. The two bee’s represent her two daughters, the teacup is because her sis collects cups, the “cat suit” is because her sis loves all things leopard. The star is representative of her sister as well as she has a “thing” for stars. (Much like I have a thing for hearts I suspect.) You’ll find a Boyd’s bear paw in this painting as well as her sis collects Boyd’s bears. The final personalization is the mini Michael Jackson glove (she’s a fan!) This painting was both a challenge and a pleasure. I’ve not done so many requests before in such a tiny space and I’m proud of myself for bringing them to fruition. It wasn’t easy but it was educational to me. I’ll take another photo of it before it gets shipped off to Canada and possibly repost it so you can see it in it’s final glory. All that’s left for me to do at this point is to varnish it and add the hanger. I like to let the paint cure for a few days before varnishing as I’ve had streaks appear when I’ve varnished fresh paintings ~ just something to keep in mind.

On another note I want to wish you all a happy weekend and let you know that my doors are definitely still open for commissions if you are interested! I really enjoyed the challenge!

You Are My Rose

You Are My Rose

This is a sweet little journal entry I did a few days ago while I was going crazy on seven projects. Boy did I pay for that marathon. I was useless yesterday. My inability to sleep got the best of me and I ended up with burnt out eyes and a head that was as foggy as London. I finally called it a bust and went and laid down for about four hours in the bedroom in the dark. It helped my eyes but I was overly tired and couldn’t sleep. I did get some much needed rest though. I was delighted to get a decent nights sleep last night and wake up without that foggy, dehydrated feeling. I’m happy to report that today I’m feeling as right as rain! (and it’s sunny outside!)

Today I’ll be doing the shopping that I put off yesterday and it’s a good thing as we are out of several much needed things. I’ll have to write out a list before I go as I have a tendency to forget something very important each week. I have a very selective memory. (my way of saying I can’t remember anything!) Hee.

I finished a commission this week and I’ll share that with you tomorrow. I still have to varnish it and add the hanger but I’ll be emailing the gal I made it for today to get her feedback. She ordered it for a gift for her sister. What a sweetheart! (Thanks Andrea!)

Okay…it’s another day off for the hubs so I need to go mix up some eggs to make a scramble for when he decides to wake up. He’s got four days in row off! OY! Hee hee.

Cancel That

I made this yesterday and am putting the finishing touches on it today, aka, painting the edges, finishing the back with decorative paper, and varnishing. This is an 8″x8″ stamp collage made on reclaimed barn wood. The stamps are a collection of mine, and some that were given to me over the years. I came across the envelope full of them a few weeks back and thought about my stack of reclaimed barn wood and what I was going to do to make up-cycled creations. This is the first in my series that I will be working on over time. I think it turned out REALLY COOL! It’s like a gallery of mini art all pasted together in one place. Well, actually when you think about it that’s exactly what it is. What do you think? I’m considering putting a submission in to see if the gallery downtown would be interested in having this hanging in their establishment. /Crosses fingers, last time I did that I got rejected but this piece is “edgier” than my girls.

Today is a day to honor our Vets and I hope everyone takes a few moments, calls or emails a vet they know and says “Thank YOU! I really appreciate what you did for me and our country.” It truly means the world to them. So here’s to you guys and gals. I salute you!

A Rainbow of Fall Colors

A Rainbow of Fall Colors

Using a sales flyer from Trader Joe’s I couldn’t help but use this article about Fall Colors. Playing with stencils in my journal I used watercolors and colored pencils along with Stabilo fine point felt markers. The quote under the flowers I created is a bit hard to read so I’ll write it out for you  ~

“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful;they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”
~ Luther Burbank

There really is a lot of truth to that. I use A LOT of flowers in my art. I feel they make the paintings more “happy.” Speaking of happy, I’m happily working away on three projects today, two of which are nearly done…PLUS ~ I’ve planned dinner and will be making it soon. I found a recipe for herb-roasted onions by Ina Garten ~ AKA ~ The Barefoot Contessa, the only thing I’ll be doing different is adding chicken tenderloins to it. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! It’s a new -to-me recipe so I’m happy to feed my family some variety!

It’s Whispering Wednesday so I have some super secrets for you… okay maybe not that super or secret but fun tidbits about me regardless.

  • I get carsick in low-riding cars
  • I actually enjoy grocery shopping
  • I’m not half bad at “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” at least from the comfort of my own couch
  • I was room mom at my son’s school for 5 years in a row
  • I taught art class to fifth graders one year as a volunteer
More secrets next week ~ Until tomorrow, You’re not going to believe what I’ve got to share!

Swimmin’ in the Rain

Swimmin’ in the Rain

This journal entry now leaves me with only 4½ pages left in my current journal! YAY. I did a doodle page yesterday evening and sketched out another to play with in between various other projects.  I’m having another few sleepless night with bad dreams so when I finally do drift off I end up waking up with “what the heck was that all about” dreams. I’m having some peach and passion fruit tea with a rather large dollop of honey to help ease my nerves today, along with a large side over of eye-drops to ease the stress of dry eyes.

My desk is yet again a huge mess. I wish it was self cleaning, much like in snow white when the birds helped her out so much!  I don’t know about you but I keep getting a ton of art supply catalogs…it’s that time of year and they just keep tempting me. I’m temporarily hiding them after carefully marking new and interesting products to put on my wish list. =)

I can’t believe it’s 2sday again! Where does the time go? This week’s version of Tammy’s Toys is truly insane, especially considering it grows to 600% it’s size once watered. It’s as crazy as a Gremlin! Here’s a good laugh for you! I’ll be back tomorrow to share some oddity or another!

Yikes Stripes

Yikes Stripes

Another journal entry and I’m getting oh-so-close to finishing this journal. I hadn’t worked it in for a while and figured it wasn’t going to get done if I didn’t open it! So today I did a few sketched and finished this doodle. The one I’m working on now is a mermaid and then I only have seven pages left. I figure at the rate I’m going it’s going to take me till the end of the year to get this journal completed. Since I started it after breaking my ankle in January I guess that’s par for the course.

This week I have a commission to work on. Andrea requested something special for her sister for Christmas so I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to add all the elements she’s requested into the painting. After from trial an error I think I’m finally decided on a few things that will work. =) The challenge will definitely be fun!

I’ve already started tonight’s dinner… I big pot of spaghetti and meatballs! Now I can finish playing with the mermaid I’m making and hopefully have it done to share with you tomorrow.  So~~~ Until 2sday! Have a fantastic afternoon.

Madame Butterfly

Madame Butterfly

I’m pretty much finished with my Madame Butterfly painting now. I have a few tiny touch-ups to complete but I’m happy with the results of this chicklette. I used mini brads and felt flowers to top off the painting to give it more of a 2D look. I also went crazy with my Martha Stewart glitters and mini glass beads. I love adding interesting textures to the surfaces of my paintings. When I sketched this out I knew her dress was going to be a yellow “flower.”  I got the idea for her belt after I had applied the dress.I think it really adds a lot. She’s now ready for Project Runway!

Election day is finally over and TV and phone calls are safe once again. No more blind phone calls from candidates and no more mud slinging commercials… at least for a while. Enjoy the peace and quite while you can as the 2012 presidential election process begins in January. There will be more pollution for our eyes and ears soon enough.

It’s time again for Whispering Wednesday so here we go!

  • My favorite game is Scrabble
  • I became a published poet at the tender age of 14
  •  My first “official” job was in a library at the age of 15
  • I’m fascinated by medieval times
  • I LVE the smell of lavender

Work in Progress…. again!

Ξ November 2nd, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Around The House, Art-tastic, Big Eyed Girls, Les Petite Dolls, Tammy's Toys |

Work in Progress

I sketched this out last night and did some shading on her face. Today I dug my heals in and started playing more. She’s partially wet in the picture so I had back away… good time for photos! I have her name picked out but I’m not telling until she’s finished. I’ll be playing with her today as much as I can between layers of glazes and paints. I only have one painting going at the moment so I have a lot of time to let paint dry. I really had a great time with her hair! So fun~~

Tammy’s Toys

I missed last 2sday’s Toy show and tell ~ but I have it ready today. I’ve read this book through several times and it’s always fun to ask the questions to those around me when I have my nose in it. It’s a great conversation starter and you never know where you’ll end up when you start asking the wacky questions. For example ~~~

Would you rather:

Eat three peach pits

or

Eat a bucket of watermelon seeds

This book is full of insane questions that really make you think. Would you rather: Age only from the neck up … or… age only from the neck down? Not only does it have the game board Zobmongo!! question format, it also has tidbits of hilarity and odd little facts that make reading it even more fun. It’s great for a car tip, a visit with friends, reading when you’re bored, and sharing at parties, it also makes an awesome gift with hours of fun to share.
